What will I study on BSc Integrative Biomedical Sciences?

Biomedical Science involves the study of the processes that underlie human health and disease and developments in the field drive and guide medical practices.

By introducing and integrating the advanced educational resources of Zhejiang University and the University of Edinburgh, we will build a new type of biomedical education base that focuses on fostering in students an integrated knowledge of the liberal arts, biology and the medical sciences, and endowing them with capacities for scientific and technological innovation and global collaboration, as well as the capacity to lead and realize their ambitions for a better society.

From the professional aspect, efforts will be made to consolidate students’ fundamental as well as cross-disciplinary knowledge, to strengthen their ability to carry out research, and to broaden their minds. Besides, emphasis will be put on training students in the aspect of humanities and social sciences, thus enhancing both their emotional intelligence quotient and their intelligence quotient. Personal guidance for student development and planning the future will also be provided. Based on the potential and career aspirations of the individual students, “personalized” and “diversified routes of the pre-career education will be offered in order to prepare them to become talented researchers and teachers in the biomedical sciences, or specialists in innovation and management in the healthcare and biomedical sciences industries. We anticipate that our students will work in the academics, industrial and administrative sectors after graduation.

The first and second years of the BSc in Integrative Biomedical Sciences provide a firm grounding in the knowledge, understanding and skills required in specialist disciplines of immunology, infectious diseases, neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology and reproductive biology.

In Years 3 and 4, the programme focuses on exploring these disciplines in depth and receive research training in state-of-the-art Biomedical research laboratories in the Joint Institute, labs in Zhejiang University School of Medicine, or labs in University of Edinburgh Medical School. [LP1]

Embedding of undergraduate teaching within an internationally respected research environment provides opportunities to be taught by world-leading scientists and to engage in work in our research groups.

Innovative Programme

The Institute’s Integrative Biomedical Sciences programme has been jointly designed by senior professors from Zhejiang University’s Basic Medical School and University of Edinburgh’s Deanery of Biomedical Sciences. This collaborative programme, delivered in English, brings together the best of both universities in terms of curriculum and teaching staff. The programme aims to deliver advanced knowledge and academic excellence, alongside an opportunity for student to become a part of the international society, by creating an immersive experience in China while participating in global debates.

Dual Award

Students on the BSc Integrative Biomedical Sciences will be the students of both Zhejiang University and the University of Edinburgh.

Students who successfully complete the programme and meet the requirement of both universities will receive two Bachelors’ Degrees:

Degree of Bachelor of Science (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh

Degree of Bachelor of Science from Zhejiang University

ZJUUoE Institute.jpg

The Zhejiang University-University of Edinburgh Institute (ZJU-UoE Institute) is a collaboration in the field of Biomedical Sciences between Zhejiang University of China and The University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. The two universities are establishing an international research institute at the International Campus of Zhejiang University in Haining, Zhejiang, that builds on the existing strengths of both, and aims to foster collaborations in teaching and research. The Institute will provide undergraduate education programmes that produce students with academic excellence, leadership skills, innovative capacity and global vision.

The first programme offered by the Institute is a BSc in Integrative Biomedical Sciences. This programme will bring students into a scientific field of huge importance in the 21st century, with global advances in healthcare and rapidly developing knowledge of the human body being shaped by research in biomedical science.

The programme brings together the knowledge and expertise of staff of the Zhejiang University School of Basic Medical Sciences and The University of Edinburgh Medical School. This is a new and exciting collaboration, and the first of its kind for both universities, making this a unique opportunity for students of biomedical sciences.

An intake of 60 undergraduates is planned in September 2017. Eventually the ZJU-UoE Institute will reach a scale of 600 undergraduates and 300 postgraduates.

World-class Cooperative Partner

International Campus, Zhejiang University is very harsh on partner selection criteria, and our partners are all from developed countries in the world. According to the requirement of discipline development, International campus cooperates with several world’s top universities and respectively build joint institutes with each of them.

The University of Edinburgh: The University of Edinburgh has a long and rich history as the birthplace of modern bio-medicine. It is a world-renowned center for medical education. The University of Edinburgh is Darwin's Alma mater, Dolly, the cloned sheep’s hometown, the birthplace of the first test-tube baby. Up to now, the University of Edinburgh has produced 21 Nobel Prize winners, 3 British prime ministers, 4 presidents and 2 premiers.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC): UIUC is one of the ten major league (Big Ten) founding members and a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), has been hailed as “public ivy". UIUC is especially outstanding in the field of engineering, which ranks the 4th in the 2015/16 world university rankings. Up to now, UIUC has produced 23 Nobel Prize winners.

World-class Teaching Facilities

The ratio of student-teacher in international Campus is not higher than 8: 1. Our teaching staff is composed of full-time professors, professors hired by two universities, and course professors. International campus employs advanced ideology and administration system for faculty management, and recruits highly talented professionals in compliance with world-class standards. In addition, some of the professors come straight from Zhejiang University and our partner universities.

Students of Globalization

International Campus is a place where top students cluster. A significant number of international students are admitted annually, with no less than 30%.
