Competed with the graduate students, but won the third prize in the paper competition

ZJUI sophomore students won the third prize of the student paper competition of Cross-strait Workshop on Monitoring and Control in Civil Engineering

Recently, there was a good news from  the 10th Cross-strait Workshop on Monitoring and Control in Civil Engineering. Wang Chen, student of class of 2022 of computer engineering in ZJUI, won the third prize in the student paper competition with his excellent paper-writing and on-site presentation and defense ability. It is reported that Wang Chen is the only undergraduate to participate in the competition, the other nearly 100 participants are master or doctoral students. Although the theoretical basis is weak compared with other contestants, under the guidance of Dr. Li Binbin, the assistant professor in ZJUI, Wang Chen won the highest score in his presentation session through well preparation and unremitting efforts, and finally won the third prize. Su Yipeng of Computer Engineering, Li Haoran of Electrical Engineering, and Shen Yueqi of Civil Engineering, wrote the paper " Modal identification of bridge structures based on fast Bayesian FFT method" together with Wang Chen.

This essay comes from the summer lab internship program. ZJUI provides students with abundant summer lab or corporate internship opportunities every year. Wang Chen joined the team of Professor Li Binbin by using the internship opportunity of the freshman summer vacation. This project group is a good embodiment of ZJUI cross-disciplinary innovation education. Students from different programs discussed and studied together and used algorithms to solve civil engineering problems. In this essay, Wang Chen's team introduced the probability model and solution strategy of the fast Bayesian FFT algorithm, and demonstrated the practical application of the modal parameter identification of a pedestrian cable-stayed bridge as an example. Different from the traditional identification algorithm, the fast Bayesian FFT algorithm aims to calculate the posterior probability distribution of modal parameters, and provides the method to identify uncertainty while calculating the Bayesian estimation of modal parameters, which has important scientific and engineering significance.

August 23rd to 26th, Prof. Li Binbin led Wang Chen to Wuhan to participate in the 10th (2019) Cross-strait Workshop on Monitoring and Control in Civil Engineering, which was the first time that Wang Chen's has participated in the academic conference. Nearly 100 students from Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Dalian University of Technology, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and other universities participated in the student paper competition session. Although, it was the first time to compete with the graduate students, Wang Chen said that he was “not nervous at all”, “one is because there are a lot of opportunities to experience presentation in ZJUI’s daily courses, and the second is because the presentation and slides are well prepared by myself, and have been practiced for more than a dozen times before participation.” For the good result that he finally got, Wang Chen also said that it is really insignificant. He is very grateful to Dr. Li Binbin and Dr. Xie Yanlong for their instruction, and his achievements were largely due to the guidance and help of them. By participating in the academic conferences and paper competitions, he became interested in scientific research and increased his knowledge and inspired him to have a clearer understanding of his future career. He indicated that he will continue to conduct in-depth research in this cross-disciplinary field in the future.

Dr. Li Binbin also said that for a first-year undergraduate students, it is very valuable to participate in the paper competition and win a prize. This is inseparable from his efforts. During the one-month summer training, he kept asking questions, trying to understand every detail, and made great efforts in writing the paper and preparing conference reports. In addition,  this award is the result of teamwork. The three members of the team -- Su Yipeng, Li Haoran and Shen Yueqi -- cooperated and drew on each other's strengths to complete the research project. He also hopes that this experience will stimulate the enthusiasm of students in scientific research and add new impetus to their study .

When it comes to cross-disciplinary education, Dr. Li said the emerging data science provides new ideas for solving the problem of traditional civil engineering, such as the evaluation of structure safety status cannot be realized by traditional mechanics analysis. The solution of the problem need to be combined with physical modeling (positive problem) and data analysis (inverse problem) two aspects. Dr. Li's research introduces the basic principles of data science into civil engineering research and realizes the organic combination of positive and negative analysis of civil engineering model, which is also in line with the theme of ZJUI interdisciplinary and convergence research.
