Dr. XIE Xin, director of the committee and associate professor of ZJU-UoE Institute, first introduced the responsibilities and members of the Campus Public Service Advisory Committee, and briefly reported the results of the satisfaction survey of public service at International Campus during 2020 that was carried out in the early stage.

The Office of Campus Development and Management, Library and Information Center, and the logistics service units reported, responded and answered questions based on their responsibilities and the problems collected in this survey.

Chinese and foreign faculty, staff and students had a lively discussion on campus public service, sharing opinions enthusiastically, and provided suggestions on improving the quality of campus public service.

Through this symposium, the communication mechanism among the faculty, staff and students and the logistics service has been further explored. The initiative and creativity of Chinese and foreign faculty, staff and students participating in campus governance have also been motivated, making our campus a better place for everyone.

The Campus Public Service Advisory Committee of International Campus, Zhejiang University was established in 2020, with the approval from the Communist Party Committee of the International Campus, ZJU. The committee aims to explore effective ways for Chinese and foreign faculty, staff and students to participate in campus public service governance. Composed of representatives of the faculty, staff and students and support management personnel, the committee supervises and evaluates the campus public service democratically on behalf of the faculty, staff and students. In January, the committee organized a special satisfaction survey of public service, focusing on campus service such as catering, IT services, shuttle bus, and logistics support, etc., and received positive responses from the faculty, staff and students. A total of 443 questionnaires were received from the faculty, staff and students, with 674 comments and suggestions collected. An assessment and evaluation system for campus public service has been initially established.

Suggestions

Faculty, staff and students on campus often drink direct drinking water, especially foreign faculty and staff. We want to make sure that the drinking water is clean and healthy, and we hope that the campus will publish the direct drinking water test reports regularly.”

“More emergency training and simulations should be provided. In a fire emergency simulation at ZJUI a couple of months ago, I saw that some students ignored and stayed in the room as they didn’t think it is an alarm.”

“The variety of food especially the second floor is always the same. Since we go to the canteen every day, we would like to have more choices.”

“Some teachers might extend the class, they find no halal food available after 18:30. so they want to extend the service time of halal food to 19:00.”

Feedback from the faculty, staff and students

“The meeting was very useful for me and the other foreign faculty. For the first time we had an opportunity to gather together and discuss campus issues face-to-face with people responsible for running the campus service. We were able to provide our suggestions and also received valuable information regarding the current status and planned improvements of the various campus services. I was highly satisfied with the event.”

—— Dr. Mikael Bjorklund, Associate Professor from ZJU-UoE Institute

“The format of the symposium is great. Each functional office introduced their own responsibilities in English, allowing foreigners to have a better understanding. These three units have made full preparations before reporting and have provided detailed answers to the questions proposed on-site. The communication became much smoother. Keep going.”

——Dr. Fangwei SHAO, Associate Professor from ZJU-UIUC Institute

“The meeting was amazing. We had the opportunity to discuss with the managers about problems and discuss on possible strategies to improve. I am sure that together we can improve our campus faster and better.”

——Dr. Cristoforo DEMARTINO, Assistant Professor from ZJU-UIUC Institute

“I think the meeting was very fruitful and efficient in connecting the residents of the International Campus with the Campus Services. We could articulate our concern and suggestion to the right people, so that, hopefully, it would be listened and bring positive changes for the campus. A longer Q&A session would be better for the future meeting.”

——Mr. Ian Meliala, PhD student of ZJU-UoE Institute

“In this symposium, based on the questionnaire and data collected and provided by Campus Public Service Advisory Committee, we can get an overlook of the evaluation and expectations of IC members on the development of campus public service. This is undoubtedly a good strategy to stimulate the healthy development of the campus service system. In such a symposium that brings together the campus service team and those being serviced, the active and enterprising scene of Chinese and foreign faculty, staff and students speaking freely symbolizes that the bridge of communication between the two parties is gradually being improved.”

——Feng Yue, an undergraduate student of class of 2017, ME

“I am honored to participate in this symposium as a student representative and speak for the students. In the process of participating in this symposium, I felt the power of Campus Public Service Advisory Committee, which promoted faculty, staff and students to work together and make suggestions for the development and construction of the International Campus.”

——Yuan Chentai, an undergraduate student of class of 2019, ME
