ZJUI International Undergraduate Degree Program (ZJU Degree)

ZJU-UIUC INSTITUTE

The Zhejiang University-University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Institute (the ZJU-UIUC Institute, ZJUI) is a cooperatively-run engineering college located on the Zhejiang University (ZJU) International Campus in Haining, China. Complemented with contributions from counterpart colleges and departments from ZJU, ZJU-UIUC Institute provides a world-class engineering education. The institute was officially launched on April 11, 2016. At present, ZJUI has 518 undergraduates and 48 Ph.D. candidates. The ZJUI faculty is composed of talents recruited from top-tier international universities and distinguished professors from ZJU and UIUC. In the three years since its establishment, ZJUI’s multi-disciplinary engineering curriculum has gradually condensed. The preliminary result of this innovative educational practice is becoming evident. Its undergraduate students have distinguished themselves as winners at various international and national competitions and conferences as well as co-authors in renowned academic journals. The ZJUI curriculum provides a strong foundation with a strong mix between both interdisciplinary innovation and teaching practice.

Zhejiang University

Founded in 1897, Zhejiang University is one of China's oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education. With strong research strength, ZJU currently ranks among the top three universities on the Chinese mainland and within the top 100 in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings and QS World University Rankings. Eighteen disciplines of ZJU are in China’s “Double First-class” Initiative (3rd in China) while 39 disciplines received the top grade in the recent national education assessment (1st in China). The engineering programs of Zhejiang University are collectively ranked as 4th in the World Best Global Universities Rankings published by US News & World Report in 2016. Notably, ZJU has 25 Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 25 Members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

A. Electronic and Computer Engineering (ZJU Degree)

Students who successfully complete this 4-year degree program will receive a Bachelor’s degree from ZJU

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Electronic and Computer engineering program develops a student’s understanding of a computer system from top to bottom – from application software and operating systems to hardware and circuits. This program equips students with skills to create a wide range of computing systems and devices that we have come to use and depend upon daily.

B. Electrical Engineering and Automation (ZJU Degree)

A 4-year degree program leading to a ZJU Bachelor's degree for students who successfully meet all graduation requirements.

Electrical engineering and Automation is a multifaceted discipline that has produced astounding technological innovations, shaping virtually every aspect of our modern life. It is a rapidly evolving discipline based on the application of mathematics, physics, and computation to address the changing demands of our information-age society.

In today’s information age, Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering are becoming very popular programs in engineering. 2. Breaking the discipline boundary, Accelerating cross-disciplinary innovation

Today’s most important engineering challenges require expert teamwork across many disciplines. To promote such a mindset, ZJUI students study the deep knowledge and fundamentals that define their core discipline but work in multi-disciplinary teams in design projects and comprehensive problems. Advanced classes in systems-oriented topics, multi-disciplinary student teams assembled for major international competitions, and visitors from all over the world will help in discipline convergence and cooperation. Students engage in solving broad engineering challenges from their very first semester and throughout their whole curriculum. By their final year, students will organize and work on multi-disciplinary design teams to invent a solution for their chosen problem.

ZJUI focuses on the following cross-disciplinary areas:

• Intelligent city (including intelligent infrastructure, intelligent traffic management, intelligent cargo, dynamic intelligent parking, etc.).

• Energy development and sustainable development (including smart grid, high-quality living environment, etc.)

• High-performance materials (including nanomaterials, atomic-scale materials, etc.)

• Advanced manufacturing (including robotics, industrial big data analysis, process control and intelligent computing, etc.)

• Medical technology with engineering focus (collaborate with ZJU-Edinburgh Joint Institute to develop advanced medical treatment method, medical equipment design, and manufacturing, etc.)

4. Recruiting world-class faculty, Building a strong faculty team

Talent recruited from top-tier international universities that include UIUC, ZJU, MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, CalTech, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Tsinghua, HKUST, Cambridge, and many others. So far, we have 1 Member of U.S. National Academy of Engineering U.S., 54% of them are foreign nationals from the United States, Italy, Germany, Singapore, Ukraine, etc.

5. Residential college model, Well-rounded Education

The International Campus has a Residential College housing model with two colleges currently in operation. Each residential college provides a friendly and supportive learning-and-living environment with library facilities, study rooms, discussion and interactive spaces, laundry facilities, activity spaces, and fitness rooms. Each student has a private bedroom, shared bathrooms, and a common living space. The Residential Colleges play a significant part in the daily lives of ZJUI’s students, forming a closely-knit community that represents a microcosm of the diverse student population on the International Campus. These colleges also provide an exceptional opportunity to meet and interact with students, tutors, and professors with different interests – people whom the students might not otherwise encounter in their courses or extracurricular activities.

The Master of the Residential College, Professor Lap-Chee Tsui, is a renowned educator who served as the President of the University of Hong Kong for 12 years. The Fellows, Tutors, and Counselors in each College seek to help students to make the most of their learning experience through organizing general education, personal development, extracurricular activities, and events. These activities seek to mold students into well-rounded responsible individuals with knowledge, leadership skills, broad competence, creativity, and morality. A trained support team is available on campus 24 hours daily.

6. First-Class Campus

•The International Campus provides faculty and students with a first-class environment for living and learning.

•Support and services are provided by the Campus Operation & Service Center and the Student Center.

•Teaching facilities include classrooms equipped with interactive integrated teaching systems, classrooms with flexible furniture and configurations, small meeting and discussion rooms, and world-class laboratories.
